The International Energy Agency (IEA) has introduced an online resource to track global progress towards energy goals agreed at COP28, including limiting global warming to 1.5°C. The platform was developed in collaboration with the UN Climate Change initiative, as part of a new phase of cooperation between the two organisations. It will be updated regularly to reflect the latest available data and analysis. The tracking page indicates where the world currently stands in relation to climate goals – including on targets such as tripling renewable energy capacity and doubling energy efficiency improvements by 2030 – and where it needs to be in 2030 in order to meet them, helping to inform policymakers. In parallel, the IEA has published its annual global electric vehicle (EV) outlook. The report highlights continued growth in EV sales, which reached roughly 17 million by the end of last year. The number of electric cars sold in Q3 2024 was also roughly equivalent to the total number of cars sold globally throughout 2020. The outlook forecasted that EV sales in China would jump to about 10 million by the end of this year, accounting for about 45% of all car sales in the country – while one in nine cars sold in the US are expected to be electric.
Today, @IEA has launched a new online resource tracking global progress on the key energy goals agreed at #COP28
Developed with @UNFCCC, it will be updated regularly with the latest IEA data & analysis, supporting policy makers as they aim to turn climate promises into action ⬇️
